“One of the symbols of Marseille’s new face”.
Since its inauguration in June 2013, the building designed by Rudy Ricciotti (in association with Roland Carta) has been one of the symbols of the new face of Marseille. This mineral cube-perfect square measuring 72 metres on each side-is enclosed by a fine concrete mesh, a strong visual signature that has helped elevate the Mucem to the status of an internationally recognized “world-object”.
Surrounded by docks and facing the sea, the J4 offers 360-degree panoramic views of Fort Saint-Jean and the Mediterranean, visible from the glassed-in exhibition rooms, the roof terrace and the outdoor ramps that encircle the building. It is linked to Fort Saint-Jean by a 135-metre aerial walkway.
J4 is the real “heart” of the Mucem, hosting major permanent and temporary exhibitions, as well as regular cycles and highlights of artistic and cultural programming.
