Following the success of the first Marseille leg, with 150,000 visitors to the Mucem, this flagship exhibition, dedicated to a major player on the 20th-century art scene, will be presented at the Institut Valencià d’art Modern, in Valencia, Spain from October 8, 2019 to February 16, 2020.

This exhibition is part of IVAM’s 30th anniversary celebrations.

Painter, writer and inventor of “Art Brut”, Jean Dubuffet (1901-1985) was a major figure on the twentieth-century art scene.

In the aftermath of the Second World War, this elusive and polemical artist brought into play a radical critique of the art and culture of his time, making constantly renewed invention the pillar of creation and thought. Borrowing from anthropology, folklore and the field of psychiatry, he continued the decompartmentalizing activity of the interwar avant-gardes, shattering the belief in supposedly primitive art and opening up new avenues of creation.

This exhibition shows how Jean Dubuffet’s work intertwines his painting and writing activities with the research he devoted to what he called Art Brut. It presents Dubuffet’s artistic production in all its diversity, with a particular focus on objects and documents from the research he carried out while visiting museums of ethnography and folk art, as well as various collections dedicated to the “art of the mad”.

Conceived and produced by the Mucem (April 24 – September 2, 2019), in co-production with the Institut valencien d’art moderne, Spain (opening October 8, 2019 – February 16, 2020) and the Musée d’ethnographie de Genève (where it will also be shown from May 8, 2020 – January 3, 2021).
