Acquisition: "The Virgin and Child Seated on the Holy House of Loreto"

Monday, October 11, 2021

The Holy House of Nazareth, where the Virgin Mary is said to have lived and where she is said to have received the Annunciation, was an important pilgrimage site in the Holy Land during the Middle Ages. At the end of the Crusades in 1291, it became more difficult for Western Christians to travel there; it was then that its miraculous transfer to Loreto, in the Italian region of the Marche, is said to have taken place.

The presence of the Holy House is a source of great pride for the town’s residents: it has become one of the town’s symbols, and is celebrated there every year on the night of December 9–10. Fires are lit to mark the path to the Holy House, and a statue of it—such as the one acquired in 2021—is carried in procession through the streets of towns and villages. This work has undergone previous restorations, and its physical condition reflects its original function, which involved it being moved, lifted, or touched by the faithful. A new restoration project was carried out upon its arrival at the Mucem to reattach areas where the paint layer had lifted and prevent them from detaching during handling.

It will, in fact, be transported very soon to Fort Saint-Jean to be featured in the exhibition “Another Italy ” (May 25–October 10, 2022), where it will showcase the richness and diversity of forms of popular devotion, as well as the artistic creativity that accompanies them.
