Acquisition: That Raoul LALA There

Friday, April 18, 2025

The Mucem and puppets share a long-standing love affair. The museum’s storage areas are brimming with them. Since 2021, thanks to the interactive tour created by M@riolab, Raoul Lala has been offering a fun way to explore the Mucem’s puppet collection.

To celebrate this wonderful collaboration between the museum and the famous Marseille puppet, the Mucem decided in 2022 to acquire Raoul Lala. Cyril Bourgois, Raoul Lala’s creator and puppeteer, crafted a replica of his own puppet during a five-day residency at the Mucem’s Conservation and Resource Center.

“This Raoul LALA here,” born on October 14, 2022, is now part of the museum’s puppet collection to physically accompany the “Raoul Lala: Operation CCR” exhibition. He is thus entering the Mucem’s collections with the inventory number MP 2022.1.1. He now joins the objects classified in the unique category of “Educational Materials” within our collections.

Cyril Bourgois is a graduate of the National School of Puppetry Arts in Charleville-Mézières; since then, he has worked on a variety of projects ranging from puppet theater to film and web productions. This collaboration between the artist and the museum illustrates the Mucem’s commitment to the performing arts and contemporary artists.
The “Raoul Lala: Operation CCR” tour is offered during certain school breaks for families and recreation centers at the Mucem’s Conservation and Resource Center (Belle de Mai).
