Acquisition: Graffiti Artist Sike

Friday, April 18, 2025

In 2022, the Mucem expanded its collections through the acquisition of works, creative tools, and photographic archives by the graffiti artist Sike. This acquisition builds on the “Graff & Hip-Hop” research and collection project, which has been conducted since the late 1990s by the National Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions, of which the Mucem is the successor.

A French graffiti artist, Sike was one of the first to create graffiti in Southeast Asia (Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand) and Canada. Active since 1989–1990, he estimates that he has painted between 2,000 and 2,500 trains, not counting his murals. Sike is a member of the groups 313, SK, ADN, FTW, DRS, and TKO. He has also been selling spray paint cans since 1998 and runs a graffiti shop in Toulouse. At the same time, he launched his own clothing brand.

Among the acquired works is the piece titled “Take Your Place,” created in 2014, which will be on display during Heritage Days 2022. This graffiti-covered TER train seat symbolizes the enduring presence of graffiti culture inside subway and train cars, a trend pioneered by New Yorkers in the 1970s. Through this piece, Sike sought to share a testament to his journey as a graffiti artist.

The fire extinguisher customized by Sike and repurposed as a giant spray can, as well as the can he pierced with a putty knife to create a wide spray of paint, also enrich the collection of graffiti artists’ tools already housed at the Mucem. These objects illustrate the ingenuity of graffiti artists in their pursuit of speed, fluidity, and grandeur.
