The shadow itself that writes

New Averroes Encounters

  • Performance-
  • Show

At the Mucem, Wajdi Mouawad brings ideas to life in a gripping one-man show.

Invited in 2025 to the Collège de France to deliver his inaugural lecture for the chair “The Invention of Europe Through Languages and Cultures,” Wajdi Mouawad drew inspiration from the experience to create *L’ombre en soi qui écrit* (The Shadow Within That Writes), a stage adaptation in which thought becomes theater. Performing alone on stage, he offers a powerful meditation on writing, exile, memory, violence, and that part of each of us that resists knowledge.
Blurring the lines between lecture, theater, and poetry, this production by one of the greatest playwrights and directors of our time gives voice to words of rare intensity, questioning both our relationship to creativity and to our history.

Written and directed by Wajdi Mouawad.

Warning — sensitive content. This performance addresses themes related to trauma, violence, and war, which may be disturbing to some viewers.

As part of “Franchir / s’affranchir,” a special edition of the Nouvelles Rencontres d’Averroès in collaboration with L’Orient-Le Jour, and the 2026 Mediterranean Season.

A bar and light refreshments will be available on site following the event, starting at 7:00 p.m.
