June 20, International Refugee Day: SOS MEDITERRANEE celebrates 10 years of operations at Mucem

On June 20, to mark International Refugee Day, the European sea rescue association SOS MEDITERRANEE will look back on ten years of rescue operations in the central Mediterranean during a special day at the Mucem, featuring a round table discussion, a screening of Muriel Cravatte’s film Mothership, followed by a meeting with the director and association volunteers. The day concludes with an evening of concerts and DJ sets to celebrate 10 years of SOS MEDITERRANEE operations.

Although over 43,000 people – men, women and children in distress – have been rescued at sea by SOS MEDITERRANEE over the last ten years, the humanitarian emergency is still with us. With the Mediterranean as a backdrop, the Mucem is the perfect opportunity to relaunch its call to mobilize and stay the course, together and for as long as it takes!

  • Thomas de Pourquery

A prominent figure in the contemporary jazz scene, singer-songwriter and saxophonist Thomas de Pourquery is well known for his boundless curiosity and his flamboyant pop and jazz ensembles. On June 20, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of SOS MEDITERRANEE, he will treat us to an exceptional solo piano-and-voice performance.

  • Sam Karpienia

Sam Karpienia, singing in French or Provençal Occitan, sings of the travelers’ sun that lights the way. It is a journey of brotherhood, fraught with pitfalls, where the human spirit emerges with nothing but a mandola and a voice. The traveling singer draws inspiration from the women and men he meets along the shores of the Mediterranean, the cradle of music stirred by the ebb and flow of sorrows and joys.

From Kanjar’oc to Dupain, via Gacha Empega and De La Crau, Sam Karpienia has, over the course of 20 years, forged a voice of incomparable evocative power. Melodies carved with a knife, raw and electrifying emotion, carried like the poignant song of the uprooted.

  • Tarek Abdallah

Originally from Egypt, Tarek Abdallah lives in Marseille, where he composes, performs, works, and teaches the oud, its techniques, and its history. Accompanied by his students—trumpeter Nicole Kolodziej and singer and percussionist Hassan Dakroub—he presents the result of his efforts to pass on his art: a way of listening, breathing together, and fostering a dialogue between different artistic paths.

As part of this event in support of SOS MEDITERRANEE, the trio will perform a repertoire of traditional Arab-Mediterranean music centered around an Egyptian protest song by Sheikh Imam, *ليه بيضحك البحر* ( *Why Does the Sea Smile?*).

  • Maryam Kaba

Maryam Kaba is a dancer, choreographer and activist of Franco-Ivorian origin.

A former French champion in rhythmic gymnastics and sports (1992 and 1994), she founded the AFROVIBE® dance fitness concept in 2013. Inspired by Afro-descendant dances, AFROVIBE® is based on the values of self-acceptance, respect and sharing. Maryam first developed the concept in Paris, then in Brazil over a four-year period. Maryam advocates multiculturalism and joy.

She multiplies collaborations and solidarity actions. Based in Marseille since 2017, she works in France and abroad to enhance women’s (and men’s) bodies, encouraging her flock to deconstruct injunctions and reclaim their bodies to better boost their self-esteem.

  • Matteo

DJ, producer and co-founder of the group Chinese Man, Matteo is constantly on the lookout for new projects and artistic discoveries.

With his signature mix of Hip-Hop, Afro, Baile Funk, Shatta, Gqom and Bouyon, he offers ultra-danceable sets, never hesitating to merge with buzzing DJ collectives.

In 2023, he launched “Applause”, an evening concept that propels us to the frontiers of musical genres, between kuduro, shatta, baile funk, bass music, grime, breakbeat, 2-step garage and hip-hop (to name but a few). But it all revolves around the same idea: celebrating diversity through dance and joy!

  • Twerkistan

Twerkistan is a collective with a plural, creative and festive DNA, producing and promoting arts affiliated with urban cultures. At the heart of the project is the production of cultural, festive and musical events, reinventing the codes of a more inclusive and free party.

The collective has been led since 2017 by a dozen professionals from the Marseille cultural sector, and develops the artistic careers of 6 resident DJ’s: Habba Babba, Kermittta, Pakdjeen, Yung Pad, Mama Jo and DJ Nasty N.
