Suspended, Forward-Looking, and Future-Oriented Museums

We're all familiar with physical, real-life museums, but how can we tell the story of those museums around the world that never see the light of day?

We are all familiar with physical, real-world museums. Others are abandoned for political or economic reasons, or become impossible to maintain when the host country is plagued by conflict and destruction.

Still others are in exile or exist only virtually. The two-day conference explores the alternative histories of these museums, focusing on making the invisible visible through case studies, including the Museum of Clouds, a virtual museum founded in 2021 by Palestinian and French artists and architects to preserve Gaza’s contemporary artistic heritage, which is threatened with extinction, and the transcontinental museums in exile, transcontinental museums—often conceived as traveling exhibitions—that have embodied artists’ support for peoples’ struggles for emancipation, particularly in Palestine, Nicaragua, Chile, and South Africa.
