Mamma Roma, a middle-aged prostitute, is freed from her pimp on the occasion of his wedding. She then takes her young son, Ettore—who knows nothing of her past life—back with her, settles in a working-class neighborhood in Rome, and becomes a market vendor. While she harbors hopes for Ettore’s success, he begins hanging out with the neighborhood’s idle youths…
