A screening organized in honor of Marjane Satrapi, offering a chance to rediscover this iconic animated film.
Tehran, 1978: Eight-year-old Marjane dreams of the future. Cherished by her modern, cultured parents and close to her grandmother, she follows with excitement the events that lead to the fall of the Shah’s regime.
With the establishment of the Islamic Republic comes the era of the revolution’s commissars, who control people’s attire and behavior. Marjane, who is required to wear the hijab, now dreams of becoming a revolutionary. Soon, the war against Iraq brings bombings and hardship… Domestic repression grows harsher by the day. Her sharp tongue and rebellious stance become problematic. Her parents then decide to send her to Austria to protect her.
*Persepolis*, by Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud (2007, 1 hr 35 min).
