Visiting regulations
The present rules set out the conditions for visiting Musem areas, designed to ensure the safety of people and property, the preservation of the site and the quality of the visit.
It applies in its entirety to visitors to the Mucem as well as, without prejudice to any special provisions that may be notified to them:
- persons or groups authorized to use certain premises for meetings, receptions, conferences, screenings or various ceremonies,
- any person from outside the department who is present at the facility for professional reasons.
Any visitor who fails to comply with these rules or who disrupts public order may be refused entry to the site or expelled from it, without being entitled to a refund of his or her ticket. When connecting to the Internet via the Musem’s public network, users must comply with the rules governing the use of public Wifi.
Title 1-General visitor behavior in all areas
The museum is a place for the conservation and public display of the collections in its care, as well as a place for living, cultural exchange, study and leisure. Visitors are asked to comply with safety regulations, and to refrain from any attitude or comment that might be a nuisance or disturbance to others, in order to preserve the calm necessary for visiting the museum, and to ensure the smooth running of events organized there.
Parents or guardians of minors are responsible for their children’s actions and for compliance with the rules set out below.
Article 1-Dress code requirements
Visitors are expected to dress appropriately; for example, it is forbidden to go bare-chested or barefoot.
Article 2 – Rules of conduct
It is forbidden to carry out any action that may undermine public order, the safety of the works and the proper conditions for visiting, and in particular:
- to behave in a boisterous or indecent manner or, with regard to
- other visitors and Mucem staff, insulting, violent or aggressive;
- touching the works and objects on display, with the exception of tactile reproductions offered to the public;
- to pass through barriers and devices intended to contain the public and, except in the event of a disaster, to use stairways and emergency exits;
- use visual aids such as magnifiers, binoculars, monocular telescopes, etc. (except for the visually impaired);
- use showcases, pedestals and other display elements;
- affix graffiti, inscriptions, marks or dirt anywhere on the premises;
- affix posters or mobile signs inside or outside the building, without prior written authorization from the President of the establishment;
- distribute or sell any object whatsoever within the Mucem enclosure;
- carrying out financial transactions on the premises other than by authorized Mucem personnel;
- collecting money on the premises and at the various entrances, or engaging in any form of trading, advertising, propaganda or soliciting;
- obstructing the movement of visitors and blocking passageways and exits, in particular by sitting on stair treads;
- to lie on the benches or on the floor;
- racing, jostling, slipping or climbing;
- to organize events within the premises without prior written authorization from the President of the establishment;
- smoking or vaping inside buildings;
- entering or using the premises under the influence of alcohol;
- entering exhibition areas with beverages, foodstuffs or any organic matter;
- Throwing papers, litter, cigarette butts, or chewing gum on the ground;
- disturbing other visitors by any noisy activity, in particular by listening to equipment, including telephones, on loudspeakers. Only silent or vibrating modes are authorized;
- leaving personal items unattended, even for a few moments;
- unauthorized handling of fire alarms or emergency equipment (fire extinguishers, hose reels, etc.)l ;
- to use a camera with flash and/or on a tripod (unless authorized by the Mucem l, and for certain exhibitions, to bring in any camera or photographic equipment.
- to use these photographs for anything other than private use – to conduct any survey or opinion poll among visitors or staff members without authorization from the Mucem
- bringing in pets, with the exception of animals accompanying people with disabilities.
Article 3-Specifics relating to visits accompanied by children
Children under the age of 13 must be accompanied by a responsible adult who is responsible for supervising them and ensuring that they comply with safety instructions, including in areas specifically reserved for them. It is forbidden to let children run or play in indoor areas, to carry a child on one’s shoulders or to leave a child unsupervised.
Article 4 – Compliance with safety rules
Visitors are subject to the instructions given by security guards, and to the special security instructions and prohibitions in force, both inside and outside the buildings, depending on the circumstances (bag checks, restrictions on visitors, etc.).
Failure to comply with these rules may result in expulsion from the establishment and, where applicable, legal action.
Failure to comply with the provisions of these regulations may result in a complaint being lodged and legal action being taken against the offenders by the Mucem or any other body acting in its place.
Article 5-Register of comments
A register is available to visitors at the museum reception desk, where they can freely record their opinions and comments.
Article 6-Opening and closing times
The Mucem is open every day except Tuesday, May 1 and December 25. Opening times can be consulted on the website www.mucem.org
Article 7-Pricing and payment
The current prices are displayed at each ticket office. Ticket prices are quoted in euros, all taxes included, and are payable in euros only. Anyone entering an exhibition must pay an admission fee corresponding to the category to which they belong. Any user benefiting from a special rate (reduced or free admission) must be able to present the appropriate document. The list of accepted receipts is available to visitors at the museum’s reception and sales desks. Tickets must be paid for in cash; no credit can be given to any user. No refunds can be made after the event, except in exceptional cases, upon presentation of proof of entitlement and subject to acceptance by the Mucem.
Tickets may be paid for in cash (euros), cheque and bank card (Visa/Eurocard/Mastercardl, or any other means of payment for which an agreement has been signed between the museum and the issuing organization (vacation vouchers, cultural vouchers, etc.). Payment by credit card is accepted with no minimum. The ticket serves as a receipt, but an invoice can be issued on request. Invoices are issued systematically for groups.
ATMs only accept bank cards (Visa/Eurocard/Mastercard). A receipt is systematically issued. Access to the reception area and bookshop is free of charge, provided that all the provisions of the present regulations are respected and complied with. Luggage and personal effects are subject to inspection. If a prohibited item is detected (see article 16), access to the premises may be refused.
Article 8-Photography
Photographs or audiovisual recordings for professional and/or commercial use are subject to the prior agreement of the Mucem.
It is forbidden to take detailed photographs of a visitor or member of staff without their express consent. Any recording or filming of staff members requires, in addition to the authorization of the Mucem, the agreement of the persons concerned.
Freehand sketches in pencil, maximum A3 in size, are authorized as long as they do not impede traffic.
Filming, filming and recording of radio and television programs are subject to rules and require prior authorization from the Mucem. Where applicable, payment of the corresponding fees will be collected prior to filming or filming. Please note that the Mucem’s J4 building is the work of architects Rudy Ricciotti and Roland Carta, and is protected by copyright. Its reproduction for public or commercial use is subject to authorization.
Journalists may be authorized by the Mucem to photograph certain works. Technical installations and equipment may not be photographed, filmed or recorded.
Copies of works presented in the exhibition rooms may not be made without prior authorization.
Title 2-Safety of persons, works and buildings
Depending on the public capacity set for visiting areas by the Marseille Fire Brigade Safety Commission, queues may be organized at the discretion of the Mucem security services.
Article 15-Bag inspection
Automated checks are carried out at site entrances. Security personnel may ask visitors to open bags or packages and present their contents on entering or leaving the site, as in any other place on the site, in order to ensure the safety of goods and people.
Article 16-Prohibition on bringing in certain items
It is forbidden to bring into the establishment objects which, by their purpose or characteristics, present a risk to the safety of persons, works or the building, such as in particular :
- weapons and ammunition, sharp or blunt objects,
- explosive, flammable or volatile substances,
- dangerous, foul-smelling, excessively heavy or bulky objects; luggage larger than “cabin” size (25x35x55 cml), large umbrellas, tripods, unsuitable footwear (spiked shoes, etc.).
- unauthorized items: food, beverages (only clear water bottles and flasks with a maximum volume of 100 cl are allowed, no alcoholic beverages except those sold and consumed in indoor catering areas), plants in exhibition areas.
It is strictly forbidden to introduce or consume toxic products or substances prohibited by law (narcotics, etc.) on the premises.
Article 17-Accident, threatening act, abnormal event, disturbance of the peace
Any abnormal event is immediately reported to a security guard. Visitors must refrain from any action likely to threaten the safety of persons or property. Any threat or insult made against Mucem staff or service providers in the course of their duties will result in prosecution of the perpetrator(s) and a ban on entering the Mucem.
Article 18-Accident, illness
Any accident or personal discomfort is immediately reported to a supervisor or receptionist, and the victims are taken care of by SSIAP (fire and personal assistance service) staff until help arrives. It is forbidden to move the sick or injured person, to give him or her water or to administer any medication before the arrival of the emergency services. If a doctor, nurse or first-aider is present, he or she must remain with the patient or casualty until he or she has been evacuated; he or she must leave his or her name and address with the supervisor on site.
Article 19-Fire
In the event of an outbreak of fire, the utmost calm must be observed. If evacuation of the building is necessary, it must be carried out in an orderly and disciplined manner, under the guidance of the staff, in accordance with the instructions they have received.
Article 20-Accident or material damage
In the event of an accident or material damage, a report is drawn up by the Mucem security staff who witnessed the incident. If necessary, the Mucem will file a claim with its insurer. The victim is also invited to report the accident to his or her insurer, so that compensation can be considered.
Article 21-Lost child
Lost children are taken to the nearest reception desk. After Mucem closes, lost children are taken to the 2nd arrondissement police station, 40 avenue Robert Schuman, 13002 Marseille.
Article 22-Alert in the event of theft or removal of a work of art
Except in cases of force majeure, no work on display may be removed or moved in the presence of the public during Mucem opening hours. Any visitor who witnesses an intervention or damage to a work of art, or the removal or displacement of a work of art, is invited to immediately notify the safety/security officers. In accordance with articles 223-6 (omission to render assistance) and R 642-1 of the French Penal Code, all visitors are required to lend a helping hand to Mucem staff when assistance is requested by the competent administrative authority.
In the event of attempted theft in the showrooms, warning measures are taken, including closing access and controlling exits.
The intentional destruction, mutilation or degradation of buildings, paintings or works of art is an offence punishable by the penalties set out in articles 322-1 to 322-4 of the French Penal Code.
Article 23-Exceptional closure
In the event of overcrowding, unrest, strikes or any other exceptional climatic situation or situation likely to compromise the safety of persons or property, the Mucem may take any measure required by the circumstances. In particular, the Mucem may be closed in whole or in part, or opening times may be modified.
Ticket sales may also be halted in whole or in part, and the museum closed in whole or in part. No immediate ticket refund may be claimed from the museum under the terms of this article. Requests for refunds must be made in writing and accompanied by the ticket and a bank statement.
Article 24-Lost property
Items found on the premises, if not removed before closing time, are kept for one month by Mucem. They are then transferred to the Service des objets trouvés, 41 Bd de Briançon, 13003 Marseille.

Title 3-Rules for outdoor areas of the Mucem
The purpose of this section is to inform visitors of the conditions under which they can visit the outdoor areas of the Mucem.
It is designed to ensure the safety of people and property, the preservation of the site and the quality of the visit.
Supervisory and reception staff are on hand in outdoor areas to inform visitors and assist them in the event of difficulty. They are responsible for ensuring compliance with these rules.
Article 25-Access to outdoor areas
Access to the outdoor areas of the Mucem is free.
Self-guided groups (minimum 8 people, with speaking facilities) must notify us of their intention to visit at least one week before the date of the visit, and pay a reservation fee. For security reasons, security staff may ask visitors to open their bags or packages and show their contents on entering or leaving.
Article 26 – Opening and closing times
The opening and closing times of the outdoor areas of the Mucem are set by decision of the President and posted at the entrances. They may be modified if circumstances so require.
Article 27-Le jardin du fort Saint-Jean
For everyone’s comfort, please respect the work of the gardeners and use only the paths reserved for visitors. The Migration Garden is fragile. It is therefore forbidden to walk or sit on the lawns, to picnic outside the designated areas, to pick or damage plants, to break or cut foliage, to mutilate trees or to climb them.
It is also forbidden to use all or part of these areas for the following activities in particular:
- team or individual ball sports (soccer, basketball, etc.);
- individual throwing sports (golf, shot-putting, l ;
- team or individual sliding sports (skating, roller skating, skate boarding, etc.)
- presentation in flight of aircraft or aerostats of any kind (kites, gliders, models powered by rubber or internal combustion engines, etc.);
- water games of any kind, including the launching of any floating object or craft (sailboats and miniature boats, etc.);
- gambling; games, sports activities, dangerous behavior or actions that may cause incidents or accidents.
Article 28 – Rules of conduct for visitors to Fort Saint-Jean
In the outdoor areas of Fort Saint-Jean, in addition to the obligations stipulated in article 2 of the regulations, it is forbidden to:
– to deposit waste or objects of any kind outside the litter garbage cans and containers reserved for this purpose;
– to bring in pets, with the exception of animals accompanying people with disabilities;
– use rollerblades, bicycles, skates, scooters or any other motorized device,
– climbing the buildings and works on display;
– introducing firecrackers, fireworks and any other similar noisy devices, objects or devices;
– camping or setting up camping equipment;
– damaging the site’s equipment and facilities;
– finding birds or using traps, baits or instruments of any kind to catch, frighten or chase them;
– lighting fires or using open-flame appliances or devices without authorization;
– using spiked or studded footwear;
– taking any action likely to damage the estate or alter its purpose.
– intentionally destroying, mutilating or damaging buildings, plantations, objects or furnishings intended for utility or decoration. These acts constitute
délis.
Title 5-Interior exhibition space regulations
Article 29 – General information
Entry to and movement within exhibition areas during public opening hours are subject to possession of a valid admission ticket:
- ticket issued by a cashier or automatic ticket dispenser,
- ticket purchased over the Internet or from a retailer, membership card and/or loyalty card, pass justifying free admission (except on the first Sunday of the month, which offers free admission to all national museums and during exceptional free events organized by the institution),
- permanent or temporary badge issued by the Mucem or an authorized authority.
Visitors are not required to relinquish this title before leaving the Mucem, and may be asked to show it at any time.
Article 30-Objects not allowed in showrooms
The following are not permitted:
- wheelchairs powered by flammable fuel. All means of transport or locomotion are prohibited on the premises.
- baby carriages,
- bulky children’s strollers, baby back carriers with unprotected metal frames – cane strollers are available for loan from the checkroom,
- rollerblades, bicycles, skatesboards, scooters and any other motorized equipment,
All means of transport or locomotion are prohibited on the premises. Wheelchair users must use the elevators; escalators are not permitted. The facility declines all responsibility for damage caused to third parties by these vehicles or by their occupants. Special tours for people with reduced mobility or visual, hearing or mental impairments can be arranged on request.
Article 31-Access to workshop rooms
Access to the workshop rooms is subject to possession of a specific pass and is only possible during museum opening hours for a specific activity. The program of all activities is defined in advance by the Mucem teams. Access is granted only for mediation workshops, meetings or supervised events, in the presence of a Mucem animator or staff member. The latter is responsible for the smooth running of the activity, including the use, cleaning and tidying up of the equipment and tools used.
Article 32 – Children’s area
A children’s area is open free of charge at weekends and during school vacations(opening times available on the site). Children in this area remain under the responsibility of an accompanying adult.
Article 33-Ticket sales
Ticket sales end 45 minutes before Mucem closes. Evacuation of the exhibition halls begins 15 minutes before Mucem closes.
Mucem may organize regular or special evening events. In such cases, special arrangements are made for ticket sales and the evacuation of spectators.
Section 7-Group provisions
Article 34 – Group visits
Group visits are only permitted after prior reservation, including visits to the outdoor areas of the Mucem. They must be led by one of the following guides:
– curators ;
– curators of national museums, classified or controlled, as well as any museum curator holding a professional card issued or recognized by the Ministry of Culture;
– Mucem staff in the course of their duties;
– the service provider required by the Mucem for mediation activities;
– professional guide-lecturers;
– teachers with their pupils;
– persons individually authorized by the Ministry of Culture or by the head of the school;
– leisure center organizers;
– social center educators.
The group leader undertakes to ensure that all the present rules and regulations are respected, as well as group discipline. For school groups and for establishments hosting groups of minors, it is required to respect the conditions of supervision for school outings set by legislation or the establishment’s internal regulations.
The size of each group may not exceed 25 people for non-school groups and 35 people for groups on school outings.
If a group is late, the Mucem will not be able to postpone the activity. The scheduled end time of the activity may not be exceeded.
In the event of cancellation less than three days before the scheduled activity, no refund will be possible.
In the event of unauthorized group formation, security guards will escort the group to the exit. No tips will be accepted.
Article 35 – Group bookings
Groups are required to reserve a time for their visit, including visits to outdoor areas. Groups are admitted to the exhibition halls on presentation of proof of visit for the group as a whole and an admission ticket for each member of the group (excluding school group tickets). All speeches are subject to prior authorization from the Public Relations Department.
Article 36 – Audiophone system
Visitors in self-guided groups are allowed to bring their own microphones and headphones, to enhance the comfort of their visit. For technical reasons, the equipment used by visitors must be different from that used by the Mucem:
– Sennheiser transmitting microphones (SK 2020-D reference)
– Sennheiser receiving headphones (EK 2020-D-ll reference)
Article 37 – Respect for others
visitors Group visitors must not interfere with other visitors. Each member of the group must remain close to the person in charge.

Article 38 – Publicity and communication of inspection rules
These regulations are brought to the attention of the public by all appropriate means.
It is the responsibility of the Mucem’s supervisory staff to publicize this policy and ensure that it is applied.
Infringements of its provisions may result in the application of penalties under the conditions laid down by the laws and regulations in force.
Article 39 – Execution of the settlement
The President of the Mucem is responsible for enforcing the present regulations.
