Coffee-shop, canteen and sunset terrace: the opening of Café du Fort breathes new life into Mucem's Fort Saint-Jean

Mucem opens a new living space! As the museum’s food and beverage offer, which welcomes over 1.3 million visitors a year, continues to be enriched and renewed, the Café du Fort opens its doors in Fort Saint-Jean. Completely renovated and redecorated, the former short-lived café will now be a fully-fledged address, welcoming both locals and visitors alike, every day (except Tuesdays) and all year round.

Entrusted by the Mucem teams to the Marseilles-based restaurants Matza and Zaÿ Zaÿ, the project meets two ambitions: to breathe new life into the “village” of Fort Saint-Jean, and to resonate with the dynamism of the young local food scene.
In a simple, warm décor, playing on contrasts between wood and ceramic, Café du Fort will serve as a coffee-shop by day and a Mediterranean canteen at lunchtime. With young chef Manon Flament at the helm, you’ll find all the DNA of Matza: raw produce at the heart of a cuisine that’s frank, fresh and tender.

Favoring short circuits and quality sourcing, Café du Fort will benefit from the Mucem’s vegetable garden (40 meters long!) and the Fort’s olives harvested each year. This local, responsible approach is also reflected in its main suppliers: wines from Chateau Pompette, bread from Chez Ludivine, local fruit and vegetables from Paniers sur Mesure, fish from the Vieux Port market…

From the moment it opens (10am), Café du Fort will be offering a selection of specialty coffees extracted on the La Marzocco machine, accompanied by home-made pastries. A gourmet interlude for strollers, nomadic workers, exhibition visitors or simple fans of affordable, relaxed coffee-shops.

While Fort Saint-Jean is often thought of as a place for tourists only, the Café du Fort will now offer a flexible range of services open to all, including working lunches, coworking sessions and aperitifs throughout the year.
