Opened in Marseille in 2013, the Mucem is the first national museum located outside Paris. As the successor to the Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions, it is dedicated to Mediterranean cultures, from prehistory to the present day. It operates across three sites—the J4, Fort Saint-Jean, and the Conservation and Resource Center—through major exhibitions, a diverse cultural program, lectures, screenings, and workshops. It houses more than 350,000 objects, works of art, documents, and photographs, constituting a reference collection on Mediterranean societies. The Mucem is a true cultural hub, blending heritage, the humanities, and contemporary creativity. (Given its location at the crossroads of European, African, and Middle Eastern cultures, it aims to be a leading center for understanding contemporary Mediterranean issues.)
