Mucem, a national public administrative institution under the supervision of the French Ministry of Culture, has the statutory mission of preserving and presenting to the public, in their historical and anthropological context, cultural assets representative of the arts and civilizations of Europe and the Mediterranean. It contributes, by all scientific and cultural means, to the study and knowledge of these civilizations and to the exploration of the links that unite Europe and the Mediterranean. It participates in enriching and disseminating reflection on issues relating to the civilizations and societies of Europe and the Mediterranean. Its activities are rooted in a dual perspective of international cooperation and territorial development.
The establishment is headed by a decree-appointed President (Pierre-Olivier Costa), who chairs the Board of Directors and the Scientific Advisory Board. The President is assisted by a Scientific and Collections Director and a General Administrator (Véronique Haché).
The Conseil d’orientation scientifique du Mucem is the statutory body consulted on the establishment’s scientific and cultural orientations. Its opinions are presented to the Musem’s Board of Directors.
