From May 23 to September 5, 2022, the exhibition “Aux bains! Body, Water, Dialogues” is presented at the new Archaeological Museum in Chania (Greece).

The exhibition, conceived from an original idea by Mucem, was programmed in 2020 at the Staatliche Kunsthalle in Baden-Baden (Germany), where it presented the social and cultural history of bathing in the Mediterranean.

In its new version at the Chania Archaeological Museumthe social practice of bathing through the centuries is enriched by new themes, thanks to objects selected mainly from the collections of the Archaeological Museum of Chania and the Mucem, as well as those of museums and collections in Greece and France. Through ancient, medieval and modern objects and works of art, an original historical and artistic approach is proposed, as well as an ongoing dialogue between the different aspects of the timeless customs of bathing, a vital element of Mediterranean cultures.

Five sections, on the first floor of the exhibition, deal with the mythological bath of the divinities, the bath as an age-old ritual practice, the bath through the prism of the concept of cleanliness, beauty and hygiene, the role of public baths as places of well-being and socialization, and finally the sea and leisure bath. The sixth section, on the second floor of the museum, presents the history of soap, particularly in Marseille and Chania, with the AVEA factory, underlining the close links between the two cities.

Curators: Florence Hudowicz (curator of graphic and decorative arts, Musée Fabre, Montpellier), Camille Faucourt (curator, Mucem), Françoise Dallemagne (collection and research manager, Mucem), Dr. Chryssa Bourbou (archaeologist, curator, Ephorate of Antiquities, Chania), Eftychia Protopapadaki (archaeologist, curator, Ephorate of Antiquities, Chania).

Coordination: Mikaël Mohamed (Head of International Relations at the Mucem), Agathe Guillou (International Relations at the Mucem)
The exhibition is part of a cooperative project between the Region of Crete and Mucem. Based on an original idea by Mucem.
