The Citizens’ Climate Convention, the post-Gilets jaunes debate, participatory budgets, neighborhood councils, public inquiries, public meetings, citizen panels… Participatory democracy schemes have been multiplying in recent years. But are they doomed to be nothing more than empty promises? How can we invent new democratic tools that truly take into account the voice of the people in the life of the city?

    Nora Hamadi, journalist, has been producer of the program “Sous les radars” on France Culture and the face of Arte’s European programs since September 2021. Since 2015, she has been co-editor-in-chief with Raphal Yem of Fumigène, littérature de rue, a magazine dedicated to current affairs as seen from working-class neighborhoods, and leads numerous popular education workshops on media and information, in schools, social centers and neighborhood centers. She chairs the Collectif ŒIL and ZEP, Zone d’expression prioritaire, two associations dedicated to bringing the voices and stories of the invisible into the public arena.

    Magali Della Sudda is director of research in political science at the CNRS, affiliated with the Centre Emile Durkheim at Sciences Po Bordeaux. A specialist in mobilizations in France and Italy in the 20th and 21st centuries, she currently heads the “ANR GILETS JAUNES” research project.

    Nicolas Rio

    Nicolas Rio is a consultant in territorial cooperation and a lecturer at Sciences Po. Co-founder of the Partie Prenante agency, he assists local authorities in developing their public policies. With Manon Loisel, he recently published Pour en finir avec la démocratie participative (Editions Textuel, 2024), and works on ways to make public action more democratic.
