Tonratun, the story of Armenia told by women
Jean Rouch International Festival
By Inna Mkhitaryan (Armenia / France, 2022, 1h25) – VOSTFR
Official Selection 2023: International Competition
In an Armenian village, five women who are daughters, mothers and grandmothers tell their stories and debate life and war together, while preparing lavash, the traditional bread. The tonratun (bakery) is a space where women can talk openly about things considered shameful and embarrassing in patriarchal Armenian society. In the absence of men, they talk to each other by the fire, their tears mingling with the flour. Their words and laughter are now their daily bread.
The screening will be followed by a discussion with Astrid Artin-Loussikian and Houry Varjabédian of ARAM (Association pour la recherche et l’archivage de la mémoire arménienne), subject to confirmation, and Laurent Pellé, Festival General Delegate.
