The Unworthy Old Lady
Ciné-dimanche
By René Allio (France, 1965, 1:34)
With Sylvie, Victor Lanoux, Jean Bouise
Madame Berthe, in her seventies, has just lost her husband. Two of her five children, Gaston and Albert, still live and work not far from her, in Marseille. Albert, moreover, intends to take advantage of the capital left by his father to bail out the transport company set up with Gaston’s money. But the old lady, who has devoted her whole life to her husband and family, doesn’t seem at all prepared to end her life as she began it, in mediocrity and in the shadow of others, even her children. On the contrary, to the surprise of those close to her, Madame Berthe decides to devote herself to herself and to discovering the world. She went out and about, even at night. She goes to restaurants, makes friends with Rosalie, the pretty, free-spirited waitress, and with her friends, such as Alphonse, a shoemaker who tells of wonderful journeys, perhaps imaginary…
Based on Bertolt Brecht, this first feature film by Marseilles-based director Louis Allio is a parable about the end of an era and an ode to freedom.
Just like the old lady in the film, who enjoys an ice cream on the terrace of a café, each spectator will be offered a delicious ice cream at the end of the screening!
