The technical gesture: research and craftsmanship at the museum #2

Seminar

Following on from several years of analysis and encounters linking design and know-how, since the beginning of 2024 the cycle has offered meetings with artisans who come to talk about and demonstrate aspects of their craft, live at the Mucem: this year’s guests include an artisan-designer of bamboo objects and furniture, a basket-maker, a ceramist, a cork artisan…

We’ll be comparing the respective contributions of manual knowledge and know-how, and their transmission within and across trades. We’ll look at gestures and words, Provençal “gaubi”, Japanese “waza”, craft skills… as well as their social, cultural and economic dimensions.

This year, the seminar will be combined with a workshop with students from the Beaux-Arts de Marseille, EHESS and the University of Toulouse – Jean Jaurès.
In partnership with EHESS, Univ. Toulouse Jean Jaurès, Univ. Libre de Bruxelles, Beaux-Arts de Marseille
