The Mediterranean workshop

Regional courses at the École du Louvre

Cycle of 5 sessions of 1h30.

By Marie-Paule Vial, Honorary Chief Curator of Heritage

As Frédéric Mistral put it, “Empire of the Sun”, Provence and its wildly beautiful coastline became a favorite destination for painters from the 1880s onwards. Fleeing Paris and the rigors of winter, they came to discover this Arcadia made accessible by the railroads, and to come face to face with a light said to be unchanging. From port to port, from l’Estaque to Saint-Tropez, in search of new sensations, they turned this land into an open-air workshop and laboratory for all the experiments they shared. The history of the ateliers du Midi is made up of encounters, friendships, discussions and confrontations, during which new forms were developed: those of modernity.
