"Le Phare. Contemporary art and Charcot's disease in the skies over Marseille."

From January 12, a luminous gaze will light up the sky intermittently after dark. Thanks to the work of Brognon Rollin, Pone, the iconic beatmaker suffering from Charcot’s disease, will address a message to the people of Marseilles from the Mucem’s Fanal Tower.

We invite you to celebrate the activation of Le Phare with a discussion of Brognon Rollin’s work and Charcot’s disease, in the presence of David Brognon and Stéphanie Rollin, Guilhem (Pone) and Wahiba Gallart, hosted by Justine Bohbote and Hélia Paukner (curators at the Mucem and curators of the project).

After the round table, a stroll around Fort Saint-Jean will allow you to see the work as night falls.

  • The Brognon Rollin artistic duo

Brognon Rollin is a Franco-Belgian artistic duo who, since 2006, have presented numerous exhibitions in France and abroad. At the heart of their work are often ethical and political questions, as well as the encounters and relationships they forge with others. In 2020, Brognon Rollin enjoyed a major solo exhibition at the MAC VAL. Their work has recently been shown in Los Angeles and will be shown in Dublin in June. It is represented in several major public collections (Centre Pompidou-Musée national d’art moderne, Collection, MUDAM, Luxembourg, etc.).

  • Pone - music producer, composer and writer

Born in Toulouse, Guilhem Gallart, aka Pone, discovered hip-hop culture there. He left his native region at the age of 18 for Marseille, following in the footsteps of his friend Don Choa. In Marseille, he met a number of artists who were to have a major influence on his career, including DJ Djel, Le Rat Luciano, Sat l’Artificier, Menzo and Fellaga. Together, they formed the Fonky Family in 1994. Pone produced the entirety of the group’s first album, Si Dieu veut…, released in 1997. He has worked on the entire discography of the group from Marseilles, and has also produced other artists (113, Diams…) on a freelance basis.

In 2015, Pone experienced health problems, and a series of medical examinations revealed that he was suffering from Charcot’s disease (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, ALS). Paraplegic and tracheotomized, he has been bedridden for over seven years. However, even though he should be hospitalized, Pone lives independently at home in Gaillac, with his wife and two daughters, thanks to the knowledge he has developed of his disease, his family and close friends, and extensive medical support.

With the help of a computer and eye-tracking software, he can write, read, communicate and compose. In 2019, Pone achieved the feat of composing and mixing an album using only his eyes. He returns to the forefront of the music scene with the album Kate & Me, followed by the EP Vision and Listen and Donate. He will also be invited to mix at the handover ceremony for the Summer Paralympic Games between Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024.
He has also just published an autobiography entitled Un peu plus loin (JC Lattès, 2023).

  • The New Worlds program

Artistic creation has been particularly hard hit by the health crisis. To support the sector, the cultural component of the France Relance plan has earmarked 30 million euros for an innovative support program for the design and production of artistic projects: Mondes nouveaux. Launched by the Ministry of Culture in June 2021, the 264 projects selected by an artistic committee headed by Bernard Blistène cover most fields of contemporary artistic creation (visual arts, music, writing, performing arts, design and applied arts), including a large number of proposals from the most emerging creators.

The Conservatoire du Littoral (CDL) and the Centre des Monuments Nationaux (CMN) are associated with this program so that the creations can interact with architectural, historical and natural heritage sites.
