Les procès du siècle - Feminism, gender, minorities

  • Debate-
  • Meeting

With Aline Laurent Mayard (journalist, writer) and Yanis (author, composer, performer)
Moderator: Tewfik Hakem.
With the participation of Marie-Charlotte Calafat, heritage curator, head of the Collections and Documentary Resources Department and the Museum History Unit at Mucem.

Last year, Le Robert dictionary caused controversy when it decided to add the pronoun “iel” to its online service… What exactly are we talking about?

A contraction of “he” and “she”, the pronoun “iel” can be used to designate “non-binary” people, i.e. those who don’t identify exclusively with either the feminine or masculine genders.
Does the emergence of this gender-neutral pronoun testify to a lasting evolution in our society on the question of gender? Or is it a symptom of a new fad? Are Eddy de Pretto, Bilal Hassani and Redcar (ex-Christine and the Queen) ephemeral muses or flagships of a profound liberation of identities?

This Trial of the Century calls to the stand: gender fluidity, non-binarity, heteronormativity, assignment and self-determination.
