Crossing, Ghardaïa

International symposium

After “Traverser: le déplacement en suspens”, hosted at the Mucem in 2021, this new symposium will enable us to continue exploring the particularities and challenges of the Ghardaïa region in Algeria, in terms of vernacular architecture and practices, the art of gardening in palm groves, craft practices, community life and its rigorist traditions, the role of women, and expert water management.

The first day, “Ombres vertes” (Green shadows), will take us back to Ghardaïa’s territorial location, its architecture, its geopolitical, topographical and climatic situation.

The second day, “Resistance of Gestures”, will focus on the human and cultural dimensions of a mainly Mozabite Berber population with a singular way of life, guided by a little-known religion, ibadism. Particular attention will be paid to the role, status and practices of women in the region.

Partners: Collectif Suspended spaces, with the support of Institut Français d’Alger, École des Beaux-Arts de Marseille, LAA-École d’architecture de Paris Villette, Institut ACTE Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, CRAE – Université de Picardie Jules Verne.
