With its feet firmly in the water, Mucem is firmly committed to protecting marine biodiversity and combating pollution.

From Friday, April 5 to Sunday, April 7, 2024, the Mucem joins forces with the Tara Ocean Foundation for a weekend of conferences, screenings, immersive workshops and artistic performances, inviting us to build “A Big Blue Museum” together.

The Tara Ocean Foundation develops high-level scientific expertise on the sea and ocean. In April 2023, the schooner Tara set off along the coasts of Europe on a two-year voyage to study the impact of land-based pollution and climate change on coastal ecosystems. This major voyage will call at Marseille in April 2024: an opportunity to share the lessons learned from the current expedition, but also to take a closer look at the health of our “Mare Nostrum”.

On Friday April 5, a conference kicks off the weekend.

Saturday, April 6 and Sunday, April 7, schooner tours, workshops, screenings and lectures for all ages and all sea lovers!

From March 18 to April 20, at the Agnès b. boutique (31-33, cours Honoré d’Estienne d’Orves)

20 years of captured moments, a themed scenography: the Arctic drift, the schooner, navigation, the sea, landscapes, the living. “For over 20 years, sailors and marines have taken turns to enable the schooner Tara to sail to the four corners of the ocean. Each crew member brings a unique perspective to the landscapes and experiences encountered during the schooner’s expeditions.

The emotions they fix come back to Earth with them, perceptible to our eyes only through the captured photographs they share with us in this exhibition.”

The Program

  • The Tara Foundation

The Tara Ocean Foundation is France’s first charitable foundation dedicated to the ocean. It develops high-level scientific expertise to explore, understand and anticipate the upheavals linked to climate risks and the impact of pollution.

In 2003, in line with its environmental mission, the schooner Tara officially became a scientific platform dedicated to studying the impact of climate change and pollution on the ocean. Over the last twenty years, the Tara Ocean Foundation has continued, mission after mission, to push back the frontiers of our knowledge of our planet’s largest and most important ecosystem: the Ocean. At the same time, we’ve been sharing our knowledge with as many people as possible, raising public awareness and encouraging them to take action.

Tara Océan is not only a bearer of scientific knowledge through its expeditions; it is also a place of artistic residence. Exploration has always been a source of inspiration for artists. Aboard the schooner, they observe and rewrite new narratives of the ocean. More than 50 artists have worked aboard the schooner since 2003, cultivating and proposing a new way of looking at the world.

  • What future for the Mediterranean Sea? - Between maritime activities and biodiversity preservation

With Pierre Boissery (coastal waters and Mediterranean coastline expert, Agence de l’Eau Rhône Méditerranée et Corse), Rémy Simide (marine biologist specializing in aquaculture, Institut Paul Ricard), Audrey Lepetit (head of the Pêcheurs d’Avenir program, Planète Mer), Alexis Rosenfeld (photographer, co-founder of the One Ocean Foundation).

Moderator: Martin Alessandrini (Advocacy Officer, Tara Ocean Foundation)

This conference will aim to share with the general public the state of health of the Mediterranean, its prospects for evolution and the tools we have at our disposal for its conservation, underlining the challenge of integrating the land-sea interface into protection schemes.

Beyond marine protected areas, how can we make this a living sea, a source of resources and income for its inhabitants? How much do we really know about the state of health of the Mediterranean? What are the prospects? Are there any success stories to build on for the future?

This exchange invites scientists, experts and users of the sea to reflect on its proper conservation. This will help to make visible the political efforts of concertation and protection, which are all too often overlooked.

  • Visit Tara

A veritable floating laboratory, the schooner Tara sails the world’s seas with scientists and artists. Take advantage of its stopover in Marseille to climb on deck!

  • Meeting with artist Enrique Ramirez

Moderated by Dalil Benhis-Folliot (in charge of cultural activities, Tara Ocean Foundation)

Through photography, video, music and installation, Enrique Ramirez composes a political and poetic work that questions the meaning of the image and its power. It’s a work haunted by the sea, a sea he traveled extensively with his father, a sailmaker under the Pinochet dictatorship.

Following her residency aboard Tara, the artist will present a preview of a film and sculpture project that seeks to reveal the mysteries of time at sea, from plastic flows to human migrations.

  • Oceans, the plastic mystery

Documentary by Vincent Perazio (France, 52 min., 2016)

A staggering 8 million tonnes of plastic are discarded at sea. A huge quantity, making plastic the major polluter of the world’s oceans and seas. But this ever-growing waste is accompanied by an incredible mystery…

… 99% of plastic waste dumped at sea has disappeared!

What happens to this untraceable waste? Where are these piles of debris? This film sets out in pursuit of this invisible pollution…

The screening will be followed by a discussion with specialists in the field of plastic pollution: Fiona Cosson (director of Zero Waste Marseille), Éric Pelletier (chief scientist on the Tara Europa expedition) and Martin Alessandrini (advocacy officer, Tara Ocean Foundation).

  • Plastic at sea: solutions on land

A workshop to get to the source of plastic pollution and find solutions upstream.

Whether in rivers, near coasts or offshore, the evidence is clear: pollution is everywhere, from the microplastics we catch in our nets to the more insidious chemical pollution we never see… This waste alters the way ecosystems function, weakening marine biodiversity and endangering the coastal environment and human health.

Faced with the scale of the task, we might think that our individual actions are useless… And yet, every gesture counts. From personal commitment to collective responses, discover the extent of our power to make a difference in the Mediterranean.

  • Plankton, discovering the invisible people of the ocean

A workshop to discover the marine microbiome: a world under the sea essential to life on Earth.

Thanks to an innovative microscope designed by the Tara Océan Foundation and Plankton Planet, young and old alike will become aware of the existence of this invisible people of the Ocean.

  • Virtual reality: PlanktoQuest

Thanks to a virtual reality headset, dive into the ocean to discover its microscopic inhabitants. Use your hands to catch them, observe them up close, feed them and even dissect them to learn more about how they function. It’s up to you!

  • Artists' short films

Screening of Sur la terre (by Ariane Michel), Mission microbiome (by Giulia Grossmann) and L’homme sans image (by Enrique Ramirez).

  • Artists on board

Screening of artists’ films and reports on residencies aboard Tara (Yann Bagot, Cécile Fouillade, Giulia Grossmann, Nicolas Floc’h).

  • Acting for the planet - How can we move from intention to action together?

With : Yann Le Lann (lecturer in sociology and coordinator of the Quantité Critique research collective), Magali Payen (founder of the On est prêt movement), Maud Veith (artist photographer and co-founder of the Femmes PHOTOgraphes magazine), Axel Francke (trainer with the Banlieues Climat association)

Moderator: Alexandre Kouchner (journalist, political analyst)

The commitment of each and every citizen will shape tomorrow’s society and planet.

What actions are citizens of all generations planning to take in this changing world? How does their willingness to act manifest itself? What forms of commitment need to be invented? Are there specifically generational roles, responsibilities and modes of action?

Come and discuss it at this participatory conference (votes, polls, audience discussion)!

Through the testimonies of committed personalities, we will draw inspiration from individual and collective initiatives that demonstrate the scope for action in favor of the environment: volunteering, activism, social and environmental entrepreneurship, political commitment, digital engagement…

We’ll look at the ways in which each citizen can take action, the sociology and history of commitment, and the roles and responsibilities assumed from one generation to the next.

Through the eyes of invited professionals and participants, we’ll imagine new forms of commitment adapted to each individual.

  • Meeting with artist Nicolas Floc'h

Moderated by Dalil Benhis-Folliot (in charge of cultural activities, Tara Ocean Foundation)

A photographer and visual artist born in 1970 in Rennes, his installations, photographs, films, sculptures and performances question an era of transition in which flux, disappearance and regeneration play an essential role.

At the crossroads of art and science, Nicolas Floc’h embarked on the schooner Tara during the Tara Pacific mission, to pursue his reflection on the representation of habitats and the underwater environment.

Since 2016, Nicolas Floc’h’s project La couleur de l’eau (The Color of Water) has involved shooting the color of the water column and its variations according to depth and geographical location. Following water, its path, its cycle, its participation in the formation and transformation of territories. Colors tell us about times past, present and future.

The artist will unveil the colors of water explored around the world, including a groundbreaking project to explore the color of water in the Rhône River.
