The Mediterranean has been, and still is, at the heart of numerous geopolitical, philosophical, and identify issues. It is a point of reference not only for the European West, but also, increasingly, for what is known as the Middle East. This book is a contribution to the debates about the Mediterranean. it takes into account the multi-faceted nature of reflection on the region, as evidenced by its diverse subject matter, variable scales of observation, and interdisciplinary approach. The articles offer critical theoretical reflections on the inherited representations of the Mediterranean, which are often still used in certain academic disciplines and other sectors of society. They also analyze the emergence of new social phenomena and examine the possibility of recomposing an image of the region as a whole, in light of the recent reappraisals of the notion of the Mediterranean. The resut is a wide-ranging collection that is sure to interest students and scholars in a variety of fields, from anthropology to media and cultural studies, area studies, and literary criticism.
