Ce roman posthume est conçu en cinq parties lisibles séparément. Un écrivain invisible et génial, Benno von Archimboldi, se rend à Santa Teresa, ville du nord du Mexique où les femmes disparaissent, victimes d'un tueur en série. Il y croise Amalfitano, puis sa fille, qui s'enfuit avec un journaliste américain. Il livre finalement les raisons de sa présence dans ce lieu de cauchemar.
