La représentation est une illustration du roman pastoral "Daphnis et Chloé" écrit par Longus au 3è siècle ap. J.-C. Dans la forêt, près d'un cours d'eau, Daphnis est assis, nu, portant sur l'épaule une étoffe rouge, tandis que sur ses genoux, Chloé a posé sa tête et ses mains. Daphnis tient également dans ses mains une couronne de feuilles. La représentation est une copie du tableau de Gérard.
