Dans un intérieur, devant une cheminée allumée, un jeune garçon assis sur un banc nourrit à la cuillère deux oisillons dans un nid, qu'il a mis sur ses genoux après l'avoir retiré d'une cage, posée à côté de lui. Au pied du banc on voit un gobelet dans lequel il doit puiser la nourritre des oiseaux. Autour de lui une fillette qui porte un panier à son bras et un autre garçon le regardent.
