M. Butor a réalisé et commenté une sélection de masques dans les collections du musée Barbier-Mueller (masques funéraires iraniens, de théâtre népalais, de carnaval européen...). Son point de vue et les deux études sur l'origine et l'histoire du masque qui l'accompagnent, restituent la force de cet objet qui rend visible et tangible l'invisible et montrent qu'il constitue un art à part entière.
