Positioned overlooking the sea, on the J4 jetty, the building designed by Rudy Ricciotti forms the heart of the Mucem. This cube with its elegant concrete lacework forms a perfect square with sides of 72 metres. It is linked to the fort Saint-Jean by a footbridge suspended above the Mediterranean.

Built in the 17th century under Louis XIV, the fort Saint-Jean offers an open-air vista of the history of Marseille. Its hanging gardens and breath-taking views will tempt you to continue your stroll.

Several car parks in the vicinity of Mucem

The Indigo Vieux-Port Fort Saint-Jean car park can be accessed directly from the A55 motorway via the Tunnel de la Joliette or the Boulevard du Littoral.
Pedestrian exit at the J4 esplanade (GPS coordinates: (Lat. N/Long. E): 43.297167/5.361350).

Discovering the inescapable

The J4 building, between sky and sea

Facing the sea, this concrete cube represents one of the symbols of the new face of Marseille. Between technical prowess and aesthetic power, this architecture, linked to the Fort Saint-Jean by a large aerial walkway, offers spectacular views.

 

The Fort of San Juan, a historical monument

At the entrance to the Old Port of Marseille, this fort with the appearance of a village offers a multitude of discoveries: a historical tour between towers and ramparts, a botanical walk... A footbridge links it to the Panier district, thus ensuring continuity between the historic city centre and the museum.

 

Three restaurants, one Mediterranean cuisine

A charming restaurant, a tavern, a café... Gérald Passédat offers different spaces to satisfy all tastes. Open every day except Tuesdays and Sunday evenings.

 

The bookshops Maupetit Actes Sud

The bookshops invite you to continue your visit beyond the museum grounds. Every day except Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to closing time.

The "Folklore" exhibition, conceived by the Centre Pompidou-Metz in collaboration with the Mucem, traces the relationship that artists have maintained with this cultural heritage. Thanks to the collections of the Mucem, heir to the Musée National des Arts et Traditions Populaires, the exhibition also highlights the creation of a discipline and offers unusual parallels.

Permanent exhibition

The exhibition presents the history of the great port cities of the Mediterranean in the 16th and 17th centuries and compares it with the urban history of the megacities and metropolises of the 21st century.

 

Ruralités (Rurality)

Permanent exhibition

"Ruralités" (Rurality) traces the foundations of agriculture and livestock farming in the Mediterranean. From the Neolithic period to the present day, from the invention of agriculture to the birth of the gods, the exhibition takes you on a 10,000-year odyssey to discover the people, cultures and techniques that have helped to shape the world today.

Instant tunisien – Les archives de la révolution (Tunisian Instant - The Archives of the Revolution)

The Tunisian revolution (December 2010 - January 2011) is an unprecedented revolution in many respects. In the age of digital communication, it inaugurated the combination of new technologies with the street and introduced a new type of mobilisation, new modes of political action and new artistic expressions. The exhibition retraces the twenty-nine days of the Tunisian revolution from the spark of Sidi Bouzid to the fall of President Ben Ali.

 

Persona. Œuvres d’artistes roumains (Persona. Works by Romanian artists)

Based on the motif of the mask, the exhibition "Persona" proposes a new approach to the question of multiple identities. It combines contemporary art, folklore and popular arts to present the creations of eight Romanian artists from different generations.

 

Les Reliquaires de A à Z (The Reliquaries from A to Z)

A for "Agnus Dei", B for "Arm", C for "Monstrance", D for "Tooth"... The great themes related to Christian practices and belief are developed in twenty-six letters throughout the exhibition "The Reliquaries from A to Z": a mystical alphabet composed from the collections of the Mucem.

 

Jean Dubuffet, un barbare en Europe (Jean Dubuffet, a barbarian in Europe)

 2 May - 2 September 2019

In this tribute to Jean Dubuffet, the MuCEM explores all the facets of an exuberant oeuvre. The inventor of "Crude Art", he defended a certain conception of art that questioned, in the 1950s, the dominant value systems instituted by culture, and the supposed inferiority of the so-called primitive arts.

 

Le temps de l’île (Island weather)

17 July - 18 November 2019

The exhibition contrasts maps of Europe and Oceania, robinsonadas, utopias of yesterday and today, artists' installations... to reinterpret the images that the island awakens and to better understand the role they play in today's imaginary and reality.
