Negotiations in the Contact Zone brings together essays by cultural critics, writers, filmmakers, art historians, journalists and visual artists which were delivered in a symposium organized by Renée Green in 1994. The essays now appear as unusual documents of that moment and provide fresh perspectives on encounters in the cultural field in ways which are still rarely explored. Themes of the essays in this book include: Homeboys in Greenwich Village, Hubert Fichte in Portugal, domestic flânerie, an attempt to capture Sly Stone in print, Tulio Carella’s sensual odyssey in Brazil, a reflection on Angola and Portugal in the sixties, Tlingit elders as museum consultants and others who have all been located by the authors in the contact zone. A provocative dialogue arises from this collection of essays which address a broader definition of the notion of contact zone and its many ongoing consequences.
