This is the first book to describe the whole range of popular print production in England, from the Reformation to Industrial Revolution. Many of the 200 prints discussed and illustrated here have never previously been reproduced. As woodcuts and simple copper plates sold on the streets for pennies, they served as the tabloid newspapers of their day, dealing with crime, scandal, patriotism, prejudice, superstition and the doings of the rich and famous. Their imagery drew on medieval tradition, but their forms - almanacks, ballads, broadsides, chapbooks, and Christmas sheets - changed continually over the centuries in response to developing consumer demand.
