Tiziano Vecellio, know as Titian (Pieve di Cadore 1488/90-1576 Venice) was one of the artists to have left the greatest stamp on the history of painting, his oeuvre strongly influencing artists such as Velazquez and Manet. The leading painter in the Venetian Republic, Titian's output ranged from monumental works to psychologically revealing portraits to mythological themes, sometimes Dionysiac, sometimes elegiac in nature. Having trained with Bellini and Giorgione, he developed his own chromatic classicism up until the "Mannerist crisis". His life was marked by international fame, travels, and the friendships and tributes of the powerful and intelligentsia. Titian pursued the sens of colour, up to the point of painting with his fingers when old and almost blind. A quick visual reference intended to gauge the evolution of Titian's style at a glance.
