The Baltic exhibition in Malmö in 1914 took the pulse of contemporary culture, showing in its Hall of Fine Arts works by the prominent artists from Sweden, Denmark, Germany and Russia with Finland. Many key works were acquired, forming the nucleus of Malmö Konstmuseum. The wide span of the collection exemplifies the dynamic of the period prior to World War I. In this volume, illustrations are accompanied by three essays that describe how the exhibition was received, the role of art in relation to the self-image of emerging nations, and finally a snapshot of Russian art life.
